Moving Checklist
Use the list below to keep you focused on the things
you need to get done prior to your move
8 weeks prior:
_____ Remove unnecessary items from your attic, storage shed, etc.
_____ Use things that you can't move such as frozen foods and cleaning supplies
_____ Start a possessions inventory
_____ Solicit estimates from three moving companies
_____ Call your homeowners insurance agent to find out how your policy will cover your move
_____ Begin collecting all moving papers and receipts in a file folder
_____ Arrange to transfer your children's school records
6 weeks prior:
_____ Contact the IRS and/or your CPA for tax-deductible information
_____ Evaluate your possessions inventory: Can you donate anything? Do you need it all?
_____ Notify your friends, relatives, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc
_____ Locate healthcare professionals and hospitals in your new location
_____ Clean your closets
_____ Hold a moving or garage sale or donate items to charities
_____ Choose a mover or decide to move yourself
_____ Contact your mover about insurance
_____ Complete change of address cards via the post office, or using on-line services, to include the
following:
_____ Banks
_____ Charge Cards
_____ Religious organizations
_____ Doctor/dentist
_____ Relatives and friends
_____ Income Tax Bureau/Social Security Administration
_____ Insurance agent/lawyer/CPA/Stockbroker
_____ Magazines
_____ Post Office
_____ Schools
_____ Past employers (to received your W-2)
4 weeks prior:
_____ Send furniture, drapes and carpets for repair/cleaning as needed
_____ Gather auto licensing and registration documents, medical, dental and school records, birth
certificate, wills, deeds, other financial documentation
_____ Request refunds on unused homeowner's insurance, security deposit with landlord and prepaid
cable service
_____ Notify your gardener and pool service, if applicable
_____ Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner's, medical and life) to arrange for coverage in
your new home
_____ Contact gas, electric, water, telephone, cable television and trash collection companies for
service disconnection and connection at your old and new addresses. Also, ask for final readings.
3 weeks prior:
_____ Make your travel plans, if applicable
_____ Arrange to close current bank accounts and open accounts in new locale, if necessary
_____ Notify Department of Motor Vehicles of you new address
_____ Arrange for childcare & off-site pet sitting on moving day
2 weeks prior:
_____ Arrange for special transport of your pets and plants
_____ Service your car for the trip
_____ Contact your moving company and review arrangements for your move
_____ Save the phone book from your former residence
_____ Check on personal items that might be at the photo shop, bank safe deposit box, a neighbor's
house, on lay-away or the repair shop
On Moving day:
_____ Carry enough cash or traveler's checks to cover cost of moving services and expenses until you
can make banking connection in new city, or, keep an ATM card with you
_____ Carry jewelry and important documents yourself, or use registered mail
_____ Plan for transporting pets
_____ Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they are empty
_____ Leave old keys, garage door openers and instruction manuals needed by new owner
_____ Pack an arrival kit of necessities just in case you arrive before the mover
_____ Let a close friend or relative know the route and schedule you will travel including overnight
stops; use him or her as message headquarters
At your new address:
_____ Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
_____ Check pilot light on stove, water heater and furnace
_____ Ask mail delivery person for mail he/she may be holding for your arrival
_____ Have new address recorded on driver's license and car registration
_____ Register to vote
_____ Register children in school
